How does Glendale Community College serve the community?
For nearly 100 years, Glendale Community College has served our community as one of the region’s top community colleges. We are proud to have one of California’s high transfer rates to the UC system and other in-state four-year universities.
Why are community colleges like Glendale Community College so important?
The cost to attend California’s public universities is nearly six times greater than attending community college. Our community relies on GCC to provide affordable opportunities for local students to earn college credits, certifications, and learn job skills at a reasonable cost without incurring significant debt. GCC is the affordable training pathway for many essential workers like nurses, firefighters, and law enforcement who serve our community.
What is Measure GCC?
Measure GCC is a community college facilities improvement measure on the November 5, 2024 ballot that will provide locally controlled funding for Glendale Community College to upgrade aging facilities and provide affordable access to higher education and job training.
Why do we need Measure GCC?
Most classrooms, labs, and job training facilities at GCC were built over 60 years ago and are outdated. Our campus is in need of repairs and upgrades to replace outdated, aging electrical systems, security systems, plumbing, and gas and sewer lines. Improvements to ensure earthquake and fire safety are also needed.
How will Measure GCC repair and upgrade college facilities?
Voting Yes on GCC will:
-
Repair deteriorating roofs, plumbing, gas and sewer lines, outdated information technology systems and outdated electrical systems
-
Provide classrooms with equipment and technology to support critical career pathways like nursing, law enforcement, firefighting, paramedics, robotics and engineering
-
Improve access for students with disabilities
-
Remove hazardous materials like asbestos, mold and lead
-
Improve earthquake safety, fire safety and campus security, including safety lighting in parking lots and walkways
How do we know Measure GCC funds will be spent wisely?
By law, Measure GCC would require strict accountability, including:
-
All funds would be controlled locally for GCC improvements only and could not be taken away by the State
-
An independent citizens' oversight committee, mandatory annual audits and public disclosure of all spending would be required
-
No funds could be used for administrator salaries or benefits
-
A local measure would help GCC qualify for state matching funds that would otherwise go to other communities
Would all funds benefit Glendale Community College only?
Yes. All funds would be locally controlled and would benefit GCC only. No funding could be taken away by the State or used for other purposes.
When can I vote on a Measure GCC?
The Glendale Community College Board of Trustees voted to place Measure GCC on the November 5, 2024, ballot.
What level of support would Measure GCC need to pass?
At least 55% of those voters who cast a ballot on the measure must vote "Yes" for GCC to be approved.
